الملخص

In this age of globalization, digitalization, and media dominance, audiovisual translation (AVT) has an increasingly vital role in communication across cultures and languages. Technological developments have made AVT the most dynamic field in translation studies. Nowadays, the use of technology such as internet, TV, and satellite has made different societies, cultures, and countries closer and easier to interact with each other. This interaction is also possible through audiovisual products. Yemen is one of the consumers of the European and American films; they are the most preferable. Nonetheless, new Yemeni film productions captured many people’s attention and interest outside Yemen. Moreover, some of them are now competing for Oscar and other awards. So it can be said that the translation of films is nowadays more needed and significant than ever before.
Audiovisual texts can generally be assumed to constitute a significant challenge in a translation context. Accordingly, the general aim of this study was to discuss the principles and methods governing subtitling and dubbing issues. It investigated the issues adversely affecting the quality of subtitling, focusing on the Yemeni film, I am Nojoom, Age 10 and Divorced. Suggestions and recommendations were provided to deal with such problems and issues. The problems and restrictions frequently associated with audiovisual translation were identified with an eye on the extent of the dubbing quality production of the American film production The Great Gatsby; assessing the subtitling and dubbing based on the parameters of author-based accuracy and audience-centered acceptability.
This study addressed the issue of subtitling and dubbing from a mainly descriptive point of view. The subtitling analysis of the Yemeni film I am Nojoom, Age 10 and Divorced was conducted by focusing on subtitling problems and issues in addition to following House’s translation quality assessment model to accomplish this task and to verify the parameters of accuracy and acceptability. Furthermore, the dubbing of the American film The Great Gatsby was conducted based on the following criteria; Chaume quality standards of dubbing, House’s translation quality assessment model, and accuracy and acceptability parameters. Upon a thorough analysis of the data selected, subtitling presented a low quality of translation while dubbing presented a high quality of translation based on the criteria specified above.
