This study explores how Abdulaziz Al-Maqalih portrays Sana’a city as a woman in The Book of Sana’a. It focuses on the various ways that the poet uses in presenting this city from various angles including historical, symbolical, mythical and autobiographical aspects.
This research is limited to Al-Maqalih’s The Book of Sana’a as well as some relevant poems from other divans of this poet.
The researcher uses an analytic method in exploring the female portrayal of Sana’a by Al-Maqalih. The research depends on analyzing the lines of qasidas in the Book of Sana’a to find out the various presentations of Sana’a city in this book. There is also an interview with the poet himself to clarify some important points needed in this research.
This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One is an introduction to the research. It includes significance of the research, objectives and limitations. It also includes a brief review about the author’s life and his works.
Chapter Two presents an overview about the Book of Sana’a and Sana’a in Al-Maqalih’s Poetry in general. Also, this chapter includes a brief review about presenting Sana’a in Yemeni and Arabic poetry in general.
In chapter three,there is an emphasis on mythical and symbolic ways of presenting Sana’a as a woman such as presenting Sana’a as Eve, nymph and Bilqees.
Chapter Four investigates the historical and personal traces of presenting Sana’a as a woman that are related to specific periods and events in the history of Yemen and some autobiographical traces that refer to the poet and his deep connection to this city.
Examples of these aspects are presenting Sana’a as an ageless woman, a female fighter, weak and sad woman, poet’s beloved, etc.
Chapter Five is mainly devoted to the findings of the research. This is followed by appendices that contain the source texts of the cited lines of the concerned qasidas including
those lines taken from The Book of Sana’a or other divans of the poet. There is also a text of the interview conducted with the poet Al-Maqalih along with its translation as well as its audio script.
The researcher reaches many important findings. It is found that Al-Maqalih is a very skillful and a creative poet in likening or personifying Sana’a city as a woman. His presentation of Sana’a as a lady is so impressive, comprehensive and rich with historical, symbolic, autobiographical and intertextual traces. This poet has introduced a unique approach in describing city in poetry specially with female presentation.
