The study aimed to investigate the use of domestication and foreignization strategies in rendering the Arabic translation of The Monk of Mokha by Dave Eggers, and the effect of these strategies on the target audience’s comprehension. It also intended to identify the challenges encountered by the translator when applying these strategies in rendering CSIs. Relying on Venuti’s concepts of domestication and foreignization, Newmark’s theories of semantic and communicative translation, Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation strategies, and Toury’s Descriptive Translation Studies model, the study employed a qualitative approach to collect and analyze the data, utilizing a descriptive, analytical, and comparative methodology. The study sample included (45) examples of culture-specific items (CSIs) and expressions selected purposefully from the novel. These examples were classified into six categories: religious, cultural, social, historical, geographical, and political. An evaluation checklist was developed to measure the relevance of the selected texts and the appropriateness of translation strategies used in the TT. The findings indicated that the translator avoided adopting a rigid ideological position as expressed in the ST. Instead, the translation reflected a hybrid strategy, combining domestication for readability with foreignization for cultural authenticity. The findings also revealed a predominant tendency toward domestication, driven by operational norms that prioritize target-culture acceptability. To reduce the foreignness of the ST, the translator made extensive use of strategies such as omission, addition, and adaptation, especially with religious and political expressions. Conversely, several cultural elements were translated literally to preserve the specificity of Yemeni history and cultural heritage.
