This study aimed to investigate the challenges and strategies involved in translating Yemeni proverbs and idiomatic expressions into English using artificial intelligence. As the study is qualitative in nature, a textual analysis is applied to a sample of 50 Yemeni culturally significant proverbs and idiomatic expressions, selected from the book Yemeni Proverbs through a checklist. The checklist included a variety of proverbs and idiomatic expressions categorized into social, religious, and political themes. The selected sample of AI-generated translations was analyzed in comparison with a validated human translation. The findings reveal that deep cultural disparities and implicit meanings pose significant challenges to AI-powered translation systems (POE) when translating Yemeni proverbs and idiomatic expressions into English, often leading to inadequate English translations. The study concludes that AI systems fundamentally have difficulties in navigating the complex interpretive landscapes of culture-specific proverbs and idiomatic expressions, necessitating human intervention. This is primarily due to insufficient domain-specific corpus training, a lack of contextual understanding, and the inherent difficulty for AI systems in computationally modeling the essential socio-pragmatic dimensions of language that are crucial for effective cross-cultural communication. Strategies for improving translation accuracy include integrating cultural insights into AI systems, employing advanced contextual analysis, and developing hybrid models that combine AI with human expertise. Moreover, creating specialized databases and implementing user feedback mechanisms are recommended to enhance translation quality. The study also suggested the need for collaboration between translators and AI developers to refine AI models for more accurate translations.
